Two things are true:

  1. Baseball has one-of-a-kind moments.

  2. Baseball’s one-of-a-kind moments often repeat themselves.

Take a look at these three linescores from July 31, 2006.

Three 15-run games.

Take a look at these three linescores from last night.

Three 15-run games.

  • For the second time this season, the Yankees hit four home runs in the 1st inning.

    • On March 29, facing the Brewers, the Yankees led off the game with homers from Paul Goldschmidt, Cody Bellinger, and Aaron Judge. Later in the inning, Austin Wells homered.

    • Last night, facing the Orioles, the Yankees led off the game with homers from Trent Grisham, Aaron Judge, and Ben Rice. Later in the inning, Cody Bellinger homered.

  • The winning pitcher for the Yankees last night was Carlos Rodon. He increased his MLB-leading total to 27 hitless innings.

  • The winning pitcher for the Red Sox last night in their 10-2 win over the Blue Jays was Garrett Crochet. He is second to Rodon with 25 hitless innings this season. Crochet is 3-2 this season and 12-21 in his career with a 3.08 ERA.

  • The Mets won last night 8-2 against the Diamondbacks. The Mets will end this first month of the season no worse than tied for the best record in baseball. They are 21-9, a game ahead of the Dodgers.

  • Juan Soto is off to a mediocre start. Soto is hitting .250, with three homers and 12 RBI. The Mets, as a team, have 139 RBI, which means that Soto has just 8.6% of the team’s ribbies. Last year, with the other New York Team, Soto had 13.9% of the Yankees’ RBI. Just wait until Juan gets hot (and he will).

  • You know who else isn’t worried about Juan Soto? Steve Cohen, the Mets owner. You know how I know this? Because each week I listen to The Show: A NY Post baseball podcast with Joel Sherman & Jon Heyman. Each episode begins with a New York-centric discussion, followed by an interview with the guest, who this week is Steve Cohen (who should treat all of his friends to a subscription to this Subscript). The guests are terrific. Last week it was AJ Preller. Before Preller, Alex Cora, Buster Posey, to name a few. What I love is that Sherman and Heyman are excellent journalists, and they are not afraid to ask the tough questions, even though these guys are their guests. It’s good baseball, good journalism, and a good listen.
