THE SUNDAY BASEBALL NOTES FOR JUNE 28
FROM THE BILL CHUCK FILES
ALPHABET SOUP
The A’s - The A’s lead the majors with 8 occasions of hitting back-to-back homers.
The Jays - The leading All-Star first round vote getter in each league gets an automatic inclusion to the roster, bypassing the second round of voting. I know you couldn’t have been surprised that Shohei Ohtani got the honors in the NL and will be the league’s DH. Who guessed that the Jays’ second baseman Ernie Clement, with his .303 batting average, league-leading 21 doubles, seven home runs, and 28 RBI in 80 games, would be the leading vote getter in the AL?
The M’s - The Mariners have not scored more than three runs in a game for 13 straight games. They’ve scored 30 times in the 13 games.
The O’s - When Declan Lefevre of Elkridge, Md., was about 4 years old, a doctor noticed his legs were different lengths. And it wasn’t something he would grow out of, either. He’s 11-years old now and loves baseball, the Orioles, and Gunnar Henderson. In order for him to play, his family has had to first spend several hundred dollars to send his cleats to a place in Ohio that will modify one of them with a lift and then return them a few months later. The same process applies to Declan’s shoes as well. The other evening at Camden Yard, thanks to a partnership between the Orioles and Under Armour, Henderson gifted Declan a custom pair of UA Yard Icon cleats that match the pair the Baltimore shortstop wears on the field during games. It was a total surprise to Declan and the family.
JAKE McCARTHY OUTFIELDER
The Rockies beat the Twins yesterday, 8-5, as Hunter Goodman hit three homers. I know, very few of you care. I just found it interesting that the Rox leadoff batter, Jake McCarthy, played all three outfield positions in this game.
THREE HOMER GAMES THIS SEASON
IF YOU THINK I WRITE TOO MUCH…WAIT UNTIL I START TALKING
I had such a great time talking to two of the greatest local sports guys in Boston’s television history. I had the honor, thrill, and so much fun as a guest on UnAnchored Boston with Bob Lobel & Mike Lynch. We talked about the Red Sox, baseball, and my book with the legendary Bob Ryan, In Scoring Position: 40 Years of a Baseball Love Affair. I even talk a little bit about the next book that's coming next year from Triumph Books.
I really hope you enjoy this. Thanks again, Lobie and Lynchie.
KEEPING IT 1000
Tigers manager A.J. Hinch is on the verge of 1000 wins. His lifetime record is 999-916. When he wins #1000, he will tie Charlie Manuel for 67th on the all-time managerial win list.
Dave Roberts will join the 1000-win club shortly; he’s 997-606.
