THE BILLY-BALL SUNDAY NOTES Part 1
We have so many notes today, so let’s get started.
Aaron Judge leads the majors with hits in 48 games this season. Last season’s leader, Bobby Witt Jr. (128 games), has hits in 47 games. Judge leads the majors with at least two hits in 27 games this year….Seiya Suzuki and Riley Greene lead the majors with eight games with multiple extra-base hits….Juan Soto had two hits against the Rockies Friday night. It was the 13th time this season he had a two-hit game. He has not exceeded two hits in any game. Last season, through 57 games, Soto had 19 multi-hit games, including one four-hit game and five three-hit games. Last season, through 57 games, Soto was hitting .312 with 15 homers and a .990 OPS. This season, he’s hitting .231 with nine homers and a .770 OPS….Friday night, Dodger starter Tony Gonsolin became the 16th pitcher this season to allow at least four home runs in a game, but the first to pick up a win. Michael Lorenzen's Royals beat the Orioles on May 4, but Lorenzen got a ND….The Rockies announced Friday that outfielder Nick Martini had been designated for assignment. I’m sure he was shaken (not stirred) by the decision….Caleb Boushley earned his first career save Friday night. By throwing 3.0 IP and allowing just a run, Boushley's save came in the Rangers’ 11-1 win over the Cardinals. Gene Garber earned 20 saves in his career, in which he threw at least 3.0 IP, and the run differential in the game was at least four runs….Mmm, mmm, not so good. Matt Mervis of the Miami Marlins has not gotten more than one hit in 32 straight games. The longest streak in the majors….The Mets take up an enormous amount of oxygen in the NL East, but we should talk more about the Phillies. On April 25, the Phils were 13-13. Since that date, they have a 23-9 record, the best in baseball….After allowing the Mets four runs in the 1st inning yesterday, Colorado now has allowed opponents 4+ runs in 26 innings this season, the most in the majors. The Royals have allowed 4+ runs just four times, the fewest in the majors….The Reds and the Pirates lead the majors with nine shutout losses….
More Sunday notes after this…
FREDDIE FREEMAN (2012-2025) VS. PAUL GOLDSCHMIDT (2012-2025)
Here’s a fun comparative look at two future Hall of Fame first basemen. Freddie Freeman started in the bigs in 2010, but did not become a full-timer until 2011. Paul Goldschmidt reached the majors in 2011, but did not become a full-timer until 2012. I developed this comparison for you starting in 2012, to even out the differences in start date.
